Liam van Vuuren’s Mission to Inspire Through Mister South Africa

After earning some of South Africa’s most respected male pageantry titles, Liam van Vuuren believes his greatest challenge still lies ahead. The holder of Mr Central South Africa, Sir South Africa 2023, and Sir Top Model 2025 is now vying for the coveted Mister South Africa title—not to add another crown to his collection, but to use the platform to inspire young people and create meaningful social change.

For Van Vuuren, every title he has worn has carried far more than prestige. It has taught him that leadership begins with responsibility.

“Every title I’ve been fortunate enough to hold has taught me that representation comes with responsibility,” he says. “Every appearance, every conversation and every decision reflects not only on you, but also on the people who believe in you and support your journey.”

He believes that true leadership is not measured by status or recognition, but by service, consistency and the ability to positively influence others. Whether mentoring young people, supporting community initiatives or simply encouraging someone to believe in themselves, Van Vuuren says success is ultimately measured by the number of lives one impacts.

Known for his polished and sophisticated style, Van Vuuren views fashion as much more than clothing. To him, it is a language that speaks before words are exchanged.

“Fashion is one of the most powerful forms of self-expression because it tells people something about you before you’ve even introduced yourself,” he explains.

While he enjoys keeping up with trends, he insists authenticity always comes first. His wardrobe ranges from timeless tailoring to bold contemporary designs, reflecting his belief that confidence comes from embracing individuality rather than trying to fit into society’s expectations.

Away from the runway, dance has also played a significant role in shaping his confidence and stage presence. He credits movement with teaching him discipline, body awareness and the ability to communicate emotions without saying a word.

“Dance taught me that confidence isn’t something you wear. It’s something you embody,” he says. “Whether you’re on a dance floor or a runway, people respond to your energy long before they notice what you’re wearing.”

His journey in modelling has also inspired a deep passion for community development. Van Vuuren’s campaign, “Shift Happens,” is built around the idea that meaningful change begins with changing one’s mindset.

He is particularly passionate about youth empowerment and tackling unemployment in South Africa, believing the country must focus on creating entrepreneurs and innovators instead of simply producing job seekers.

“We have an incredibly talented generation,” he says. “If I can encourage even one young person to see possibility where others see obstacles, then I’ve used my platform well.”

Although male modelling in South Africa has grown significantly, Van Vuuren believes the industry is still evolving. Encouragingly, he says the public is beginning to look beyond physical appearance and is increasingly interested in what male models stand for.

“People are asking better questions,” he explains.

“They’re asking how models lead, how they use their influence and what impact they’re making. That’s a positive shift.”

Behind the glamorous photographs and runway shows, however, lies a demanding profession that requires resilience, discipline and sacrifice. Van Vuuren admits there were many moments when he had to create opportunities for himself because none existed.

“People don’t see the long hours, the financial investment, the setbacks or the emotional challenges,” he says. “Success has very little to do with perfection and everything to do with persistence.”

To aspiring models who lack financial resources, his advice is simple: start with self-development.

“Invest in yourself before you invest in your image,” he says. “Build your confidence, professionalism and communication skills. Your journey may take longer, but where you start should never determine where you finish.”

If crowned Mister South Africa, Van Vuuren hopes to establish mentorship programmes, workshops and networking opportunities that make the modelling industry more accessible to talented young people from disadvantaged communities.

For him, however, the greatest legacy would not be measured by trophies or titles.

“My success won’t be measured by how many people know my name,” he says. “It will be measured by how many people leave believing in their own potential.”

As he prepares for the Mister South Africa competition, Liam van Vuuren remains driven by a simple but powerful belief: a person’s circumstances should never define the size of their dreams.

Through leadership, authenticity and service, he hopes to prove that the true value of a title lies not in wearing a crown, but in using it to create opportunities and inspire others to believe in themselves.
