Q.When and how did you start up the brand Bulge and Bum?A.Bulge and Bum was born out of a need for comfortable, sexy, and versatile underwear that could indulge men’s bulges without breaking the bank. Kobus, our founder searched far and wide for the perfect fit, but the dream was met with exorbitant international prices and low-quality products. And then, on a Sunday afternoon during a light lunch, cold ice tea, chocolate cake and a bit of a debate, Bulge and Bum was born. The brand set out on a journey to procure the best materials, the softest elastic, and the greatest designs, with a focus on standing out in a market filled with multiple boring options. The brand was launched in April 2020, just three days after Level 5 lockdown was announced. With literally nowhere to go but up, up to the chinny-chin-chin that is, the brand quickly adjusted and started making matching face masks, allowing us to send our products to customers with matching masks. Since then, Bulge and Bum has indulged over 5000 bulges globally, whether it be zipping up or zipping down, Bulge and Bum are helping men feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin
Q.One might wonder why did you select the name ‘Bulge and Bum’?A.Bulge and Bum was created to provide men with comfortable, sexy, and versatile underwear could indulge their bulges without compromising on quality or price. The name “Bulge and Bum” reflects the brand’s commitment to providing comfortable and supportive underwear that flatters and enhances men’s natural shape. By focusing on both the bulge and the bum, our brand ensures that our underwear provides comfort, support, and style in equal measure.
Q.What was the main challenge especially in Africa to start a male underwear line?
1.One of the main challenges are addressing cultural and social attitudes towards men’s underwear and the male body. In some parts, there may be a stigma attached to openly discussing or promoting men’s underwear, particularly underwear that is designed to enhance the appearance of the male physique. Some people may consider it taboo to talk openly about men’s underwear or to wear more form-fitting styles that are popular in other parts of the world. In turn this could make it difficult to establish a customer base and generate sales as it may affect the market demand and limit the potential customer base.
2.Additionally, the focus on enhancing the male physique may not be as widely accepted or sought after in some parts of South Africa as it is in other parts of the world. This could limit the market demand for a brand like Bulge and Bum, particularly in more conservative or traditional communities
3.Another challenge for starting a male underwear line in Africa is the limited distribution networks. Most of the existing retail channels are dominated by large international brands, making it difficult for new brands to establish themselves in the market. Additionally, poor infrastructure and a lack of e-commerce platforms can make it difficult to reach customers in remote areas.
4.Price is also a key factor in the underwear market. Many customers may be unable to afford premium-priced underwear, making it challenging for new brands such as ours to establish ourself in the market. This required us to find ways to balance affordability with high-quality materials and design.
5.Finally, building brand recognition is a significant challenge in the South African market, especially for new brands. It takes time and effort to build brand awareness and trust, which requires significant investment in marketing and advertising efforts.

For example, the fashion brand can provide the competition’s contestants with stylish and comfortable underwear to wear during the competition, which can help to showcase the brand’s products to a wider audience. Additionally, the brand may also be able to participate in the competition’s events or provide sponsorship, which can help to increase their brand visibility and reach a new demographic of potential customers. On the other hand, the competition can benefit from partnering with a fashion brand by providing their contestants with high-quality and stylish underwear, which can help to enhance the competition’s overall image and attract more viewers and sponsors.

We will continue to innovate and develop new designs that set us apart from competitors and offer unique value to every man helping them feel more comfortable and confident throughout the day.We are also exploring opportunities for international expansion, tapping into new markets and reaching more customers around the world.
Q.What word of advice do you have to those who would like to purchase your brand products?A.Some general advice for anyone considering purchasing products from Bulge and Bum or any other underwear brand:
1.Consider your preferred comfort level:
Underwear is something you wear every day, so it’s important to choose styles and fabrics that feel comfortable, offers you the correct support and something that fits well.
2.Consider your needs:
Think about your lifestyle and activities when choosing underwear. If you are active, you may want a style that offers more support, while if you are more sedentary, you may prefer a softer, more breathable fabric. Your underwear choice should check all the boxes catered to you as an individual from the feel of the fabric on your skin to the support and comfort it offers.
3.Read reviews:
Look for reviews from other customers who have purchased products from the brand. Social proofing can give you a better and more informed idea of the quality, fit, and overall satisfaction with the product.
4.Check the sizing chart:
Make sure you choose the correct size based on the brand’s specific sizing chart. Ordering the wrong size can result in discomfort or poor fit.
5.Check the return policy:
Make sure you understand the brand’s return policy in case you need to exchange or return the product. As underwear is a more intimate product most brands are reluctant to return or exchange products, unless factory mistakes were missed during quality checks. This means ensuring you buy the correct size is paramount.
