Under the name,’Nyoka’ ,Rich Mnisi presents his solo exhibition of limited edition sculptural furniture at Southern Guild Gallery.Naming his furniture exhibition ‘Nyoka’.
Mnisi tells of a young South African who was born after the apartheid era, however she/he is still facing challenges in his or her life.
Nyoka, wrestles with the dueling forces to fear and pleasure ,fright and freedom felt so keenly by this cohort ,but that are also innate to the human experience .
This started with a nightmare .That Rich Mnisi’s mother had,as she dreamt a snake on her back .When she turned to look at it ,she saw an intense green creature, frightening ,fluid dangerous and beautiful. My journey started here and led me to Congo’s Bushongo mythology and it’s creator god Bumba, the god of vomit .
“He vomited up the sun,Earth,Moon and stars and the rest of the natural world from that acidic pain and discomfort unlike most of our world ,origins stories ,this one proposed that the beauty and life of our world could be purged instead of birthed ,…”Rich MnisiThe exhibition runs from 2nd of October to the 4th of February next year ..
